WHAT IS A NOTARY PUBLIC?

A Notary Public is often a lawyer. Who has been given the authority by the Government to authenticate and witness signatures and copies of documents.

WHY DO I NEED A NOTARY?

In many situations a Notary is required to ensure authenticity of an individuals identity or witnessing their signature. For example, Affidavits will require that they be signed in the presence of a commissioner or notary. In this situation the Notary Public will verify the individuals identity by checking their government ID. On doing so the Notary will witness the signature. In this situation the recipient of the Affidavit can rest assured knowing there has been no identity fraud.

Often Notary Services are required for authenticating marriage certificates, government gift of vehicle declaration and travel consent letters. 

HOW MUCH DOES A NOTARY COST?

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COMMISSIONER AND NOTARY?

A Commissioner for Oaths can witness an individuals signature and certain documents can be verified as being true. A Commissioner is not a Notary. For this reason its typically best to proceed with a Notary. Further, Notary Publics are able to place their official seal.

WHAT DOES CERTIFY A TRUE COPY MEAN?

This is where the Notary reviews the original and compares it to the photocopy. On successfully doing so the Notary Public will insert a clause on the photocopy as follows; I certify this document to be a true copy of the original document.

A good example of a certification of a true copy may be in the context of a Name Change Certificate.
